A Message from your Board President

Greetings! Hard to believe the first quarter of our church year has flown by. Lots going on and the members of your board wanted to share some of the things we’ve been working on.

Developmental Ministry Goals:  Together, we have begun our journey into developmental ministry with Dr. O. Last spring your board established a set of developmental goals (click here to see the specific goals) and now we are working on how we will measure our progress toward our goals. This will include things like attendance, giving, and new members, as well as a set of action plans with milestones and anticipated outcomes. These measurements will be an important way of evaluating the well-being of our congregation. We will share more about these later in the year.

Communications: In recent years, leaders at UUFR have often heard about the need to improve communications. The Board, together with staff, will be examining when, how and what we are communicating, as well as the frequency of those messages. It is a challenging area but we agree that it is an important part of our congregational life.

One aspect of this review is how we communicate with each other. We would like to note the fine work the Effective Communication Team is doing. They have presented two informative workshops at Wellspring this fall. If you did not have a chance to attend one of these, look forward to future offerings.

Governance: Your Board has also created task forces to address some outdated language in both our policies and our bylaws. While the Board sets policy, it is up to the congregation to vote on any and ALL changes to the bylaws. We anticipate bylaw changes will be a component of the May 20 congregational meeting. Members will be provided with opportunities to review and provide feedback on any proposed changes before that meeting.

Engagement Opportunities:  Speaking of congregational meetings, your Board would like the opportunity to engage with the congregation as a whole more often than just once a year. To facilitate this, we are planning to hold a congregational gathering on February 25. More information to come!

We are also hosting several engagement opportunities in December. After service on December 3, in the Music Room (12:15-1:15), before service on December 10 (down in Founder’s Hall from 9:30-10:30 and with bagels!) and during Wellspring on Wednesday, December 20 (Music Room). We hope you will take advantage of one or more of these opportunities to share your ideas and concerns face-to-face with members of your Board.

Money Matters:  While it’s still early in the year, we’re happy to report that our financial position is good relative to our budget. Income is slightly ahead and expenses are coming in as projected, though a minor blip was an unplanned expense for the alarm system in Peace Hall. For as much detail as you would like click here for the complete report of revenue and expenses.

Other highlights:

  • Hats off to the team who stepped up and led the transition of Wednesday Night Dinner. Attendance has never been higher!
  • You contributed over $14,000 to the UUA hurricane relief fund. We proud to be a part of such a caring and generous community.
  • Thanks to all our volunteers and contributors to the successful book sale and flea market.

And thank you for all you do to make UUFR such a special place.

On behalf of all of your board of directors, Robin Banker, President
