As announced in February, the Social Justice Council has created a new program, “Focusing Our Light.” To make our “light” in the greater community more powerful we will concentrate on the two major ministry areas most important to UUFR members based on last year’s survey: hunger relief, and empowerment and equality for everyone. The objectives of this effort are: to create more opportunities for members to build relationships by working together; to increase UUFR’s impact and visibility in the larger community; and to bring us into proximity with people in marginalized populations.
The first opportunity for partnership in the hunger relief area, led by Linda Liles and Carmen White, is our expanded commitment to Love Wins. This is a fabulous opportunity not only to provide food, but also to personally serve the folks at Love Wins and share a meal with them. See the article for the Love Wins lunch on September 26 about that effort. The first partnership in the area of empowerment and equality for everyone is our support of “You Can Vote.” UUFR is offering free use of our space to You Can Vote for activities such as training, phone banks, creating voter materials, etc. Our Voter Advocacy Team, headed by Nancy Moxley and Beth Ligouri, is working closely with these folks already, and you’ll have opportunities to participate in the coming months.
See the related article about Justice Sunday on August 19th. We’re also working with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle to create additional ways for us to help them in their mission, about which you’ll hear more later. Keep an eye on upcoming installments of The Chalice to learn more about all of these activities.
