June’s book is Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow, a new rendering of the struggle by African-Americans for equality after the Civil War and the violent counter-revolution that re-subjugated them.
The book is linked to a recent PBS series and is now in paperback and available at Wake County libraries. Note: if you prefer an e-edition, you should try to read on a tablet or desktop reader.
