UUFR Learning Circles and Workshops

Why we need Learning Circles and Workshops:

The PURPOSE of Learning Circles and Workshops is a valuable means of involving the congregation in lifelong religious education, developing personal relationships among congregants, and providing opportunity for intergenerational learning.

Learning Circles and Workshops must be open to everyone in the congregation, although sign-up requirements can be set. They may target certain interest groups and may intentionally include children or youth.

Definition of Learning Circles and Workshops:

Learning Circles are groups that meet at specific times (and for a finite number of meetings) for discussion of a specific topic. They may invite speakers or use books, curricula, or videos as topics.

Learning Circles are led by a facilitator, whose function is to help the group's conversation to remain on course, to assist more quiet members in being heard, and to assist the group in its collective communication. Facilitators must attend facilitator training and should select their resources, topics, and course dates by JUNE 1 (submission deadline for the UUFR handbook).

Workshops are classes that meet at specific times (and for a finite number of meetings) for instruction on a specific topic or for guided activity. (For example, painting as spiritual practice, intergenerational yoga, financial planning, etc.)

Workshops are led by teachers, working in coordination with the DRE. Teachers may not charge fees for Workshops and are able to use UUFR space designated for religious education. Teachers may also set guidelines for ages in the Workshops. Teachers should submit dates, course descriptions, and biographical information to the DRE by June 1 for publication in the UUFR handbook.

Who can facilitate or teach?

YOU CAN!! All of us have gifts, talents, and expertise that help strengthen our congregation. In addition, extensive resources are available in the YRE office. You are also invited to recruit other members to co-facilitate or co-teach with you. Remember, Learning Circle facilitators must attend one 4-hour training session (promised to be fun and meaningful!).

Contact Information:

To sign up to teach a Workshop, to review available resources, or to sign up for facilitator training, please contact the DRE, Tryst Chagnon (education@uufr.org/781-7635 ext. 18).

Facilitator Training:

Learning Circle facilitators must attend a 4-hour training session .

Adult RE is lay-led: the more of us who participate, the more we all will benefit!
