UUFR Care Committee

"Someone Will Be There for Me"

Greetings from your new Care Committee Chair. Effective in April, I assumed the duties of our Care Committee. Our previous Chair was Anne Hayes. We thank Anne for serving in this capacity for 3 years. She will be continuing on the Committee and we thank her for all the time and effort that she has given.

As our Fellowship grows we will continue to be challenged by the many needs of our membership. Hospital visits, sending cards, visiting someone at their home, provide a hot meal, transportation, telephone calls and many other volunteer opportunities will always be present. If you would like to help, we would love to hear from you. Please give me a call at 510-5098 or e-mail akcole@nc.rr.com

Mission Statement

The Care Committee provides compassionate care and support for our congregation by coordinating Fellowship volunteer and community resources.

Who are we?

The UUFR Care Committee is made up of volunteers who provide or find assistance for our Members, Friends, and their families during times of need. We consider it our pleasure and privilege to help.

When can you call on us?

Call on us when you have any of the following needs. We can provide emergency (but generally not ongoing) support in these ways.

  1. Meals --We can arrange to have food prepared and brought to your home or for you to pick up.
  2. Transportation -- We arrange rides to Sunday services or Fellowship events, or to doctor appointments or to a hospital.
  3. Visiting -- We arrange visits for our Members/Friends at home or in healthcare facilities.
  4. Memorial Service Receptions -- We arrange receptions to accompany memorial services.
  5. Cards and calls -- We send cards for significant events, to sympathize or celebrate with our UUFR family, or to stay in touch with folks at home.
  6. Support groups -- We sponsor several care-related support groups.

If we can't meet your needs, we can help you find community resources outside UUFR for help. For example, we often refer people to Infolinc at 211, formerly 800-831-1754, a clearinghouse for services in Wake, Durham, and Orange counties.

How can you reach us?

When a significant event occurs, such as a death or a birth, please contact the UUFR office at 781-7635 or e-mail us at care@uufr.org. Our interim minister, Rev. Rod Thompson, will want to know. The office staff also knows which Care Committee member to contact for different situations.

What can you do to help the Fellowship?

In your interactions with other members of the congregations--on Sundays, weekdays, in the community--you are aware of whom you see and whom you do not see, and of what you hear. Your awareness may then tell you that someone has been missing for a while, or you may become aware that someone is in a situation of need. Contact the person yourself and let them know that you care and are willing to assist. If you think that our congregation can offer assistance or support, contact the church office for follow-up.

Please read the "Care Committee" articles in the Chalice and the Care "Job Descriptions" wherever they may be posted. We have many short-term tasks, usually in the form of requests for transportation or meals.

There are many ways to show you Care without attending another meeting. However, if you would like to participate in the management of any of the above-mentioned jobs, or if there is a new service you'd like to start, ask any member of the Care Committee, call the UUFR office at 781-7635, or e-mail us at Care@uufr.org.
