In the aftermath of Sandy Hook there has been a great deal of speculation as to what is contributing to the upswing in mass shootings and violence in the public arena. Three areas have been targeted: the lack of affordable mental health care, violence in the media, and gun legislation. The panel includes WRAL anchor and reporter David Crabtree, psychiatrist, humanist and philanthropist Dr. Assad Meymandi, and Congressman David Price, representing North Carolina's 4th District. On Thursday, May 24, WakeUP Wake County joins other advocacy organizations in a press conference at Jordan Lake. Groups have united in opposition to Senate Bill 515, which repeals the Jordan Lake "rules" -- directives to clean up the polluted lake. Jordan Lake provides drinking water to over 300,000 residents and businesses in Wake County, RTP and Chatham County. Area stakeholders negotiated for twelve years to adopt the Jordan Lake rules, most of which have not yet gone into effect. Special interests and leaders in the NC General Assemvbly have in fact delayed key actions.

The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP has been organizing protests of a legislative agenda of “extremist policies” that it says would disproportionately affect the poor, African Americans, Latinos, women, seniors, and students. Week 5 of the non-violent, peaceful protest will take place on Monday, June 3, at the NC General Assembly on Jones Street. The protests include song, teach-ins, chanting and prayer.
